Description

2010. Helsinki, Finland. Part of a series of nine pictures, of 7 people, taken in Helsinki during a two hour walk on a Saturday afternoon.

Two women were sitting very close to each other waiting for something or someone at a subway station in Helsinki. I spotted the two women - clearly lifelong friends - faraway, as they seemed to have quite different personalities. One thoughtful, 'serious' and hesitant; one carefree, hilarious, very talkative and goofy. The brief discussion I had with them didn't shed much light into their background, only enhanced the first impression I had.

That is the way I tried to also depict them, enhancing the first impression I got of the two, very nice, women.

This is a picture of the 'serious' one of them. See also a picture of both of Friends (below).

This is a great example of a spontaneous portrait. You have definitely captured an essence of her spirit here, and that is one of the goals of any type of portraiture. By reading your artist comment, I definitely can see the serious that you noticed in her behavior replicated in her face.

I like how she is lifting her chin and looking slightly away from the camera. This makes her features really stand out, as does the nice frame effect of her coat hood. You chose a great angle for how she is sitting.

However, the background, while nicely toned, is a bit too busy for me. I find myself starting at the red sign in the background. The line of her head is interrupted by the other brown sign in the background. I'm not sure if it would have been possible, but perhaps a step to the right could have eliminated the unnecessary background clutter. Also, it seems to me that the background is not quite level. But that could be an optical illusion.

All in all, great shot! I love spontaneous portraits and think this is a nice example of one. <img class="avatar" src="a.deviantart.net/avatars/x/p/x…" alt=":iconxpose-it:" title="Xpose-it"/>
